Designed under the “Establishment and Institutionalization of WEFE Nexus Hub for MENA” project—implemented by the Inter-Islamic Network on Water Resources Development and Management (INWRDAM) as part of the UfM WEFE Program funded by Sida—the Hub aims to promote sustainable development by embedding the WEFE Nexus approach within institutional frameworks and operational practices.

Components

The WEFE Nexus Hub is envisioned to include three interrelated components: a knowledge hub, project generation (identification), and project implementation. The knowledge hub component is particularly instrumental in supporting the institutionalization and establishment of a comprehensive Knowledge Management Hub. By offering a structured and integrated approach, the WEFE Nexus Hub ensures that knowledge from the water, energy, food, and ecosystem sectors is managed and shared effectively. This integration helps avoid silos, fostering a more holistic understanding of the interconnected challenges faced by these sectors.

Moreover, the Nexus Hub enhances institutional capacities by organizing training programs, workshops, and sharing best practices, enabling institutions to improve their knowledge management processes. The inclusion of real-time data monitoring and advanced analytics further empowers institutions to make informed decisions based on the latest information. Through policy and advocacy support, the Hub also facilitates evidence-based policymaking, ensuring that the knowledge generated is utilized to influence sustainable practices across the region.

INWRDAM’s WEFE Community of Practice (CoP) fosters a network for continuous learning and collaboration, where stakeholders can regularly exchange knowledge and experiences. By leveraging

management of resources in the MENA and SEMED regions.

In the current situation, the traditional approach heavily relies on data collection and theoretical studies, making it rigid, slow, and unable to keep pace with contemporary challenges. This approach focuses on theoretical capacity building without giving sufficient attention to practical field execution, and it is primarily centered on problems and challenges. The WEFE Nexus Hub stands as a pivotal gateway in this shift, facilitating the move from a stagnant, problem-focused paradigm to one that emphasizes creating knowledge and practical implementation. It drives the adoption of market-driven practical and vocational training, enabling a focus on opportunities and the replication of success stories. This new paradigm shifts the emphasis from a national to a people, basin, or region-based perspective, highlighting the importance of local contexts and the interconnectedness of systems at various scales. The WEFE Nexus Hub is not just a transition but a fundamental rethinking of how we approach sustainability and resilience in these critical areas, ensuring that the focus is on actionable outcomes and regional specificity.
